NFL Suspending 3 Teams for Staying In Locker Rooms During National Anthem Is Fake News

Reports that the NFL is suspending three teams for staying in their locker rooms during the national anthem are false. While President Donald Trump called on the NFL to “fire or suspend” players who kneel during the anthem, no such action was taken—rumors that the NFL suspended several teams stemmed from a self-described satire website.

According to Hoax Alert, the fake claim originated on Freedum Junkshun, a website that publishes fake news and political satire. The article claimed that the Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers were suspended after staying in their locker rooms during the playing of Sunday’s national anthem. It purported:

The Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers, all teams with predominantly black rosters, stayed in the locker rooms while the National Anthem was being performed, breaking a league rule of conduct:

“The teams involved knew that they were required to be on the field at that time and how their players m”should” respect the flag. Playerts aren’t held to the standard because of the wording, placed there early this season by the player’s union.

The committee for football operations has decided that those teams will sit out their next three games, giving the teams they were to play the automatic win. They will also be forbidden from the playoffs and the first round of next year’s draft.

The league wants to be clear: Respect your flag.”

The report, however, is entirely fabricated. NFL teams and players have not been suspended following Sunday’s controversial national anthem protest. Freedum Junkshun clearly states in their disclaimer that their articles are completely fictitious:

We believe that there is nothing more precious than the mind of an aging conservative. Here we gather a boatload of bullhonkey, works of pure satirical fiction, to give the fist-shakers of the world a reason to hate. Reality is often in the eye of the beholder. You won’t find any of it here.

More than 200 NFL players choose to kneel or sit during the national anthem in response to comments Trump made over Twitter about the NFL’s protests. Members of both the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars took a knee or locked arms in solidarity during the anthem, the Washington Post reports. Some teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, stayed in the locker room during the anthem. The NFL said that those who protested will not be disciplined. “We also believe our players have a right to express themselves,” NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said.

Trump commented on the protests again Monday morning, tweeting, “Many people booed the players who kneeled yesterday (which was a small percentage of total). These are fans who demand respect for our Flag!” He continued, “The issue of kneeling has nothing to do with race. It is about respect for our Country, Flag and National Anthem. NFL must respect this!” He also tweeted #StandForOurAnthem amid backlash.
